Many things have changed in my life over the last 15 years. I think we all could say that. However, one thing that has definitely changed is my skin. I so wish I could tell my teenager self to take better care of my skin. I would have told myself to always wash my face clean before going to bed, avoid the tanning beds, and USE SUNSCREEN. But I didn’t (at least not all of the time).

15 years ago my skin was more prone to be oily. Now, my skin tends to be dry. In teenage years I was fighting off breakouts, now I am fighting off sun spots and early wrinkles. My point is there may be different needs for each individuals specific skin care, but the foundation work is the same.
So, if nothing else gets through in this post. Remember to wear sunscreen. — Oh, and listen to the song (or at least part of it) below if you don’t know it. You should know it. It has lots of good information. 😉
There are some things you can do to start taking your skin care in the right direction.
First, start wearing sunscreen daily. I don’t just mean in the summertime when it is 90+ degrees out and you plan on laying out by the pool. Wear. sunscreen. every. day. Every season. The sun is still out and shining in November just as it was in July.
- prevents skin cancer
- prevents premature aging
- prevents sun spots (brown discoloration spots on the skin)
Secondly, I recommend moisturizing your skin daily. Moisturizing makes the skin softer and improves elasticity. My routine is to wash my face clean at night, and then in the morning I apply my moisturizer with sunscreen for the day.
I have been using Block Island Organics Natural Face Moisturizer SPF 30 for more than a month now. It combines my sunscreen needs with my moisturizing needs. I am so thrilled and happy with this product.
I had never used any of Block Island Organics products before, and I wanted to be sure I gave it a good trial period. I get worried that some moisturizers will go on my skin greasy and I will be left feeling that way all day. However, Block Island’s Natural Face Moisturizer, while at first seems a bit thick, it absorbs very well into the skin and I don’t notice that it is there at all. My skin doesn’t feel greasy, the product isn’t heavy and my pores didn’t feel clogged after using it for a long period of time. Plus, a little goes a long way. A bottle of this will last you a good long while.
Are you ready for the best part?? It is a natural organic product! You know around here I am all about switching, as much as we can, over to natural products.

Another way to combat early aging and keep your skin looking youthful is to apply a face mask at least once a week. This is something you can do in addition to daily sunscreen and moisturizing.
You don’t have to shell out money at the spa, in fact, check out these tips on getting the spa treatment at home. You don’t even have to buy pricey facial masks from beauty stores. All you need to do is walk into your kitchen. — Yup, you heard me (or read me) right. There are SO many foods waiting in your kitchen right now that have many uses for skin care.
Anti-Aging Oatmeal Face Mask
- 1/3 cup oatmeal, old fashioned
- 1/4 cup yogurt, plain
- 2 TBSP honey
- 1 egg white
Oatmeal is great for dry skin. It is an anti-inflammatory, soothes irritation, and is a natural cleanser. Yogurt and honey are skin brighteners that help with skin discoloration. Egg whites are great for tightening pores.
Put the oatmeal into a food processor dry and pulse until you have a pretty good powder consistency. In a bowl, whisk the egg white until frothy. Add all ingredients together to form a good paste. You can use a brush or your fingers to apply liberally over your face. Let sit 15-20 minutes then wipe clean with cool water.
Okay, here it is the oatmeal face picture. This is the point where my son walks in and says “Mom is wearing food on her face again…”. Meh.
I notice immediately that my skin feels softer, tighter, and clean.
