Everyone gets good vibes when they get a sweet note from their love. This little mailbox makes it even more exciting. If you have a few cereal boxes on hand then you are ready to make this fun Valentine Mailbox project.
It’s an awesome feeling when an idea comes together. I knew that I wanted to make some type of card holder for Valentine’s Day. I have been thinking on it for a while and have browsed around different places for inspiration. Yet, Inspiration usually comes in the weirdest places. For this project, my inspiration happened over the weekend at Toys R Us. I saw a small mailbox with a working little door and thought, “okay, I got this”. I also knew I had an empty cereal box at home that we had finished off that morning.
There it is, my DIY brain train. 1 + 1 = Valentine Mailbox!
This project took me about 45 minutes from start to finish. I had little hands helping me, which probably added to my time. 😉
Here are the supplies you will need to get started.
(1) 26.8 oz. large cereal box
(1) 13.5 oz. small cereal box
*you could use any cardboard you have on hand, the cereal boxes had more flexibility to them though*
Hot glue gun
Scissors or Exacto knife
2 paper fasteners
Decoration items (decorative paper, poms, buttons, string, GLITTER, etc.)
Whew…. Now, take a break and look at Sponge Bob the golf ball. Because this mailbox will be his new home when it is finished. So I am told.
Okay, back to the mailbox. Let’s make a flag. Cut this template out on some spare box.
Alright, all done with construction. Decorate it up!! 🙂 I used some spare scrap booking paper that I had and glued it on.
Using construction paper I made two hearts and glued them onto each side of the flag. Use a paper fastener and punch it through the flag and mailbox side. flip out the prongs to secure, but it will allow the flag to move up and down.
I glued two buttons together and then glued those two on the door flap. I glued two more buttons together then glued those just above the door flap opening. I knotted a string around the door flap buttons. You can use the string to close the door by winding it around the top button. You could also use a paper fastener and a small piece of box to make a closure.
Now go write a love note to your special someone and raise up the flag. Then run and hide around the corner to watch their goofy smile as they read your message. Just kidding! 🙂
